Martial 4.44

Writer's picture: occido teoccido te

Don't worry, this isn't one of the more... colourful epigrams. When I was reading Martial for my A Level Classical Studies, I maybe had a little too much fun reading a couple more poems. This one stood out to me because of how serious it is, and because it really made me consider how Romans dealt with the aftermath of Pompeii. The way Martial contrasts what was just there with "everything buried in flame and mournful ash" makes this a most compelling epigram.

I had a little trouble with scansion since I don't often handle elegiac couplets, but this should be correct :)
