Catullus Carmen 3: The Dead Sparrow Sketch

Writer's picture: occido teoccido te

I first heard of Catullus when I entered a classroom at the end of a lesson on Lesbia and her sparrow. This poem was especially striking to me as I hadn't really thought of pets in the ancient world before, and I really loved Catullus's eulogy for a much loved pet.

As always, the pdf files have interlinear, grammar squiggles, scansion, and a translation. V1 is in black and white, V2 is in "dark mode", which I find helpful when I am definitely not working on something after midnight.
